Vorträge & Gespräche Freiburg Carl-Schurz-Haus
19:00 Uhr: Hexing the Patriarchy: Gender, Power, and Feminism in Netflix’s "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" – Vortrag aus der Reihe "Televisionary: Amerika in Serie" mit Eleonora Sereni

A darker reboot of the popular teen sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2003), Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-) revisits conventional teen drama tropes as a spooky horror that gleefully indulges in the Satanic and the occult as well as in the fearful power of witches. At its core, however, the TV show’s narrative is firmly tuned in to the current political climate, tackling topical gender issues and feminist ideology. Sabrina Spellman is a strong-willed, ambitious, outspoken young woman who uses her powers for social justice. The fantastical premise of a half-witch, half-mortal caught between two worlds becomes an opportunity to challenge cultural and religious systems, explore gender-based hierarchies, and present a configuration of female empowerment from an intersectional feminist perspective. This talk will compare the Netflix series with its ‘90s predecessor and critically address the merits and shortcomings of its articulation of gender and identity politics.

Eleonora Sereni graduated with a master’s degree in British and North American Cultural Studies at the University of Freiburg, where she is currently working on a Ph.D. project on female superheroes in American films and TV series. She also teaches courses at the University’s English Department on visual representations of women in popular culture – comic-book superheroes, femmes fatales, witches.

Im Anschluss an den Vortrag wird eine Folge der Serie gezeigt.

Dazu gibt es Popcorn & Coke zum Selbstkostenpreis.
